Lately, a lot of the background BGM are lo-fi hip-hop in my studio.  A Lo-fi hip-hop is a kind of music that is based on instrumental hip-hop beat, sometimes some old-fashioned effects are applied just in time. Our current apparel design is a combination of both modern and old-fashion design.

 I’ve been curious about death metal artwork since I created the graphics for the "Slack Logo T-shirts" that was released last season. At that time, I was also influencing for emo rap and Atlanta hip-hop artworks such as "Kenny Mason" and "nothing nowhere". 

So I inquired from an Indonesian artist "Mr Robi MuhaRomhs" whose specialty is death metal artworks on how to go about creating this.

This image was completed by him.

I also wanted the retro logo of the 1980s incorporated into this graphic. The logos of video games in the 80s fascinated me and also the logos of detective dramas like "Miami Vice" and the "Synthwave.”

I reached out to a British graphic designer whose specialty is 80s retro logo graphic design. After retouching the "Death metal influence logo" the image below was completed.

最近、作業用BGMはローファイ・ヒップホップが多い。インスト（歌詞や歌唱のない演奏だけの曲）のヒップホップをベースにしながら、良いタイミングで敢えて古臭く聞こえるようなエフェクトを掛けるローファイ・ヒップホップ。今風でもあり少し古臭さもあるこの掛け合わせは、現在のアパレルデザインに繋がる”何か”があると考えています。

昨シーズンに発売した「スラック・ロゴT-shirts」のグラフィックを制作した時期から気になっていたのがデスメタルのアートワーク。その他、「ケニー・メイソン」や「ナッシング、ノーウェア」を筆頭に、エモラップやアトランタ・ヒップホップのアートワークにも影響を受け、今回の商品が生まれました。

グラフィックを "Mr Robi MuhaRomhs" に依頼した。デスメタルのアートワークを手掛けるインドネシアのアーティストです。

デスメタルの雰囲気をデザインに活かしたいその一方で、どこか80年代のレトロ・ロゴをグラフィックに落とし込みたいという思いもありました。80年代のビデオゲームのロゴや、80年代のマイアミを舞台にした大ヒット刑事ドラマ「マイアミ・バイス」のロゴ。「シンセウェーブロゴ」とでも呼称すべきこのグラフィックに心惹かれたのです。

その時代のグラフィック・デザインを得意とするイギリスのグラフィックデザイナーに依頼。リタッチ後、下画像のような「Macross NY (マクロスNY)ロゴT-shirts」が完成しました。

"NEW YORK”のフォントは今は無き某デパートのロゴを引用。新しいEXPANSIONのロゴを採用したT-shirtsです。

Introducing a T-shirt in collaboration with NY’s HIP HOP royalty and one of the best lyricists “Master Ace". Let me tell you a little bit about this amazing artist so that you’ll get an understanding of how important this collaboration is to me.

He’s one of the most amazing HIP-HOP musicians and I’ve been an avid listener for 32 years now. Yep! I am a huge fan of his, not even going to lie. His music inspires me a lot, his wordplay, the message he passes, his internal rhyme, storytelling and his beat selection is on a whole new level of its own. 

Master Ace’s music has evolved with the times in the 33 years of his career, gaining him new fans with every album he releases. He has a lot of hit songs and you can’t just brand him with the term “old school” or "legend" alone. There are times we don’t even remember that he was an integral part of a very popular HIP HOP group called Juice Crew in the late 1980s.

He has 12 albums at the moment, including the album "Take a Look Around" which was debuted in 1990.

Although we did not see much of him after his 1995 hit album " Sittin' On Chrome." During this period, Gangster rap like the East coast Hip-Hop group N.W.A became popular in the HIP HOP world.

During some of his interviews, he explained that the thought of retiring from rap had crossed his mind due to the use of Rap Music in quoting money, drugs, violence and sex.

Nevertheless, he released "Disposable Art" in 2001, followed by the album "A Long Hot Summer" in 2004 with his style still intact.

These two albums were ranked so high to the extent that they were sold for over $200 until the reissue was released. He was making the props in the Hip-Hop underground scene all over the world rock solid again.

In 2000, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), but he did not make it known to the public until 2013. This came as a surprise to his fans.

"Pharoahe Monch" were featured in the album "The Fight Song" which was released in 2018, the song personified the MS itself and and was composed by "Marco Polo”. It was described as the most "Amazing rap song ever".

This "Master Ace" collaboration T-shirt was art-directed and approved by Master Ace himself. The idea for the graphic designs came from the artworks done in the albums "Disposable Art" and "A Long Hot Summer".

NYの大御所ラッパー「マスター・エース」とのコラボT-shirtの紹介。

ヒップホップ・ミュージックにどっぷり浸かって32年の私がこれまで最も聴いたアーティストの一人である彼。言葉遊び、メッセージ性、韻の踏み方・難易度、独特なビート選び…様々な魅力を持つ彼のリリック（歌詞）から何度も刺激を受け、数々の感動を覚えました。ヒップホップを長く聴いているリスナーなら分かってくれるはず。

33年のキャリアを持ちながら時代と共に進化を遂げ、音源を出す度に新しいファンを獲得する「マスター・エース」。現在のヒット曲も数多く、決して「オールドスクール」や「レジェンド」という呼称だけでは表現できません。1980年代後半、ヒップホップ史上最も名を馳せた集団「ジュース・クルー」であったことさえ忘れてしまうほど、彼は「今」を生きるアーティストなのです。

1990年にアルバム『テイク・ア・ルック・アラウンド』でデビュー。現在12枚のアルバムを発表しています。1995年のヒット・アルバム『スィティング・オン・クロム』以降、目立った活動は少し見当たりませんでした。

それは当時、彼はロサンゼルスで結成された伝説のヒップホップグループ「N.W.A」の様なギャングスタ・ラップの流行に悩まされていたのです。金・麻薬・暴力・セックスを引用するラップ・ミュージックに疑念を抱き、ラップ界からの引退も視野に入れていたと聞きます。

しかし、自分のスタイル・信念を曲げず、2001年にアルバム『ディスポーザブル ・アート』、続いて2004年にはアルバム『ア・ロング・ホット・サマー』を発表。

世界中のヒップホップ・アンダーグラウンド・シーンにおけるプロップスを磐石にし、再販が決まるまでは2万円以上の値段で売買されていたほどにこの２つのアルバムは高い評価を受けていました。

2000年、彼が多発性硬化症（MS）を抱えていると告白。これは、ファンにとって衝撃的なニュースでした。2018年に発売されたアルバムの収録曲『ザ・ファイト・ソング』では、ラッパー「ファロア・モンチ」と奇跡のフィーチャリング。「ファロア・モンチ」が病原菌の立場を取り、「マスター・エース」が立ち向かうという構図で繰り広げられる掛け合いはファンを震わせ「衝撃的」と評されました。

今回の「マスター・エース」コラボTシャツは、「マスター・エース」本人承認のもとアートデレクションされた一品。アルバム『ディスポーザブル ・アート』と『ア・ロング・ホット・サマー』のアートワークから切り取ったグラフィックが印象的です。数量限定です。

HIP HOP culture started in the street of Bronx in the early 70`s. The four historic elements of Hip-Hop are composed from MCing, DJing, Graffiti, and B-boying.

American artist, Phase 2’s life was hip-hop culture itself.

Phase 2 is a very gifted artist and as the founder of Subway Art/Aerosol Art also call Graffiti Art, he is greatly admired by a lot of people.  He created several theories such as “Bubble letter,” “Style writing,” “Wild letter,” and “Arrow letter”. In the style department, he’s quite an innovator and we can see this with artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat who were greatly influenced by his works. He was also commended on his work in the graffiti documentary film “Style Wars.” 

Phase 2 has also achieved a lot in the music industry. In 1982, he released his first single “The Roxy” from Celluloid Records. In that same year, he released another single titled “Beach Boy” from Tough City Records, after which he had a collaboration with Barry Michael Cooper.

He also made a lot of contributions to the break dance industry. He was the one who named the famous NY break dance crew “The New York City Breakers”. He was a member of the B-Boy crew “Electrified Movement” and he formed and invented words and dance style like "Battle" "Rocking" and "Up rock".  

He brought out a lot of amazing talents in the sphere of editorial. In the late 1970s, a lot of people were fascinated with the way he designed the flier for Hip Hop parties in New York, the designs were simply amazing! You will recall from Sotheby’s auction recently that the flier was 5 times higher than the estimated price.

In the 1980s, the multitalented Phase2 was called “a charisma of the street culture in New York City.”

Graffiti art started gaining recognition in the art industry as a real art form during the md-1980s. In order to raise the status of graffiti art, he went into action by using the situation, with this he made a call and got the name changed from “graffiti art (scribble art)” to Subway Art / Aerosol Art in the late 80s.

However, this movement was not supported by the media nor the graffiti artists. Unfortunately, he began to dislike the media who use the term “graffiti”.

From the 90s to 2000, He released lots of incredible artworks to the world. Only very serious buyers bought his work since he was restricted by the media. His artwork was also limited since his management was responsible for picking the buyers of his work.

His sculpture was displayed at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in NY. He teamed up with street clothing brand Supreme to release a capsule collection.

He designed the cover of the American music magazine “Wax Poetics”.  It was an amazing collage artwork that had the industry in shock. He was so obsessed with figurine to the extent that he released a figurine series with Hon Kong based toy company Unbox Industries. He also did the DVD cover design for Japanese iconic HIP HOP group “NITRO MICROPHONE UNDERGROUND”.

In 2002, he did a group exhibition with Futura 2000 and Ramme Izee. It was a historic moment in the history of Hip Hop.

And he made many more artworks.

On the 12^th of December 2019, Lonny Wood, also known as Phase 2 died of an illness called Lou Gehrig at the age of 64. He was an amazing Hip Hop artist who was good at what he did and he never for one day compromised his values.

EXPANSION NY clothing company is pleased to announce the release of tribute items in collaboration with Phase 2. Part of the sales will be donated to his family. We will be releasing T-shirts and Hoodies.

This design for the hoodie was originally released in 2008. And the T-shirts was designed by an artist called David Schmidlapp.

David is not only known as a photographer, but also an editor, a writer, filmmaker, performer, and an amazing artist from New York.

 Last year, a special exhibition for his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York.

He had a very close relationship with Phase 2.

Forgive me!!! There may be many mistake, I wrote what I learned from him.

フェーズ2　アメリカンアーティスト

 70年代初頭、ニューヨークはブロンクスのストリートで、ヒップホップ・カルチャーは産声を上げました。グラフィティ、MC（ラップ）、DJ、ブレイクダンスの4つが、ヒップホップの構成要素とされています。

今回取り上げるアメリカンアーティスト、フェーズ2の人生は、まさにヒップホップ・カルチャーそのものでした。

フェーズ2はマルチな才能を有し、とくにグラフィティ（エアロゾル・アート、サブウェイ・アートとも呼ぶ）のスタイルの創始者として現在でも崇拝されています。彼は、「バブル・レター」「スタイル・ライティング」「ワイルド・レタースタイルス」「アロー・レター」といった、数々のマナーやセオリーを生み出しました。スタイルイノベーターとして、キース・ヘーリングやジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアにも、多大な影響を与えています。グラフィティのドキュメンタリー映画『スタイル・ウォーズ』の中でも、賞賛すべき対象として扱われています。

フェーズ2は、音楽の分野でも優れた仕事を残しています。1982年には、セルロイドレコード社から、1枚目のシングル『ザ・ロキシー』を発売。同年に続けて、タフ・シティレコード 社からシングル『ビーチ・ボーイ』をリリースし、バリーマイケル・クーパーとの見事なコラボを見せています。

ブレイクダンス界では、あの『ザ・ニューヨークシティ・ブレイカーズ』の名付け親としても有名です。『バトル』『ロッキング』『アップロック』など、ブレイクダンスに関する用語や、これまでにないスタイルを生み出した功労者でもあります。

エディトリアルの分野でも卓越した才能を開花させました。70年代後半、ニューヨークのヒップホップ・パーティーのチラシで見せたアートワークは、人々の目を奪いました。昨年のサザビーズオークションにて、そのチラシに見積価格の5倍もの高値がついたことは、記憶に新しいのではないでしょうか。

このように多才なフェーズ2でしたが、80年代を迎えるころには、「ニューヨークのストリート・カルチャー界のカリスマ」と呼ばれる存在となっていました。

 折しも80年代半ばには、アート・コレクターや美術系の人々が、グラフィティをアートとして認知し始めます。彼はこのような情勢を横目に、さらにグラフィティの地位を上げるべく行動を起こします。時は80年代後半、「グラフィティ（落書きアート）」と言う呼び名を、「エアロゾル・アート」へと変える運動を展開したのです。

しかし、メディアやグラフィティ・アーティストたちから、賛同を得ることはできませんでした。結果、彼自身、メディアを毛嫌いするようになります。とくに90年から2000年にかけて、「グラフィティ」の語を使うメディアへの露出はなくなっていきます。

その間もフェーズ2は、アート作品の発表をやめませんでした。彼の創作活動は世界中に及びましたが、依然としてメディアでの露出は、限られていました。一部の根強いアート・コレクターたちによって、購入されるにとどまっていました。

そのような状況にありながら、彼のエアロゾル彫刻が、ニューヨーク最大規模のジャヴィッツ・コンベンション・センターに展示されることになります。また時を同じくして、ニューヨークのストリートブランド、シュプリームと組み、カプセルコレクションを二度にわたって発表しています。ここからは、破竹の勢いでした。

雑誌『ワックス・ポエティックス』では、表紙のコラージュ作品を手掛け、出版界に衝撃を与えます。香港を拠点とするUNBOXからは、アートフィギュアをリリース。

日本では、伝説的ラップグループ、ニトロマイクロフォンアンダーグラウンドの DVDジャケットを制作するなど、多種多様な作品を生み出していったのです。

意欲的な創作への取り組みとは裏腹に、フェーズ2は“頑固な人物”でもありました。仕事の相手だけではなく、購入する側であるアート・コレクターをも選り好みする性格でした。周囲から「彼のマネージメントには、苦労が絶えない」と評されていた所以は、ここにあります。とにかく、一筋縄ではいかないアーティストだったのです。

2002年、そんな彼が、フューチュラとラメルジーと組んで、ニューヨークで個展を開催することになります。「あのメディア嫌いの彼が…」と、アート界を驚かせたのは、言うまでもありません。

  2019年12月12日、フェーズ2はこの世を去ります。死因は、ルー・ゲーリック病(ALS)とされました。自分の信念を曲げず、流行にも流されず、一直線に進み続けた本物のヒップホップアーティストとして、その名は語り継がれることでしょう。

アメリカンアーティスト、デビット・シュミッドラップのモンタージュ作品を、Tシャツにプリントしました。

デビットは、写真家、編集者、執筆者、フィルムメーカー、パフォーマーと、実にさまざまな顔を持っています。ニューヨークが誇る偉大なファインアーティストです。昨年には、ニューヨーク近代美術館 (MOMA) にて、彼の特別展が開催されました。フェーズ2と親交が深かったことでも知られています。

もしかして間違いがあるかも知れない。私は彼に教わった事を書いてみた。最後に、彼を紹介してくれたSteve Brockに感謝いたします。

If he is in a good mood, he will sing “The Spinners” or “Temptations”.

And he will ask me to drive to the organic supermarket. 

Since I never held a spray can and I’m not a graffiti historian, I am not in title to talk about aerosol culture. But I know he was not representing himself as Graffiti artist. He was an American artist. 

In 80s 90s and 2000, he made the enormous difference in this Hip Hop culture, American pop art culture and street art culture. 

Come to think of it, his artwork was on the sotheby’s auction recently. 

But after all, he was a very kind person.

He bought my mother-in-law a “Gynura procubens plant”.

Also called “Longevity greens.”

That’s my brother “PHASE2” that I know.
